Wike Pledges to Cover Medical Bills of Abuja Truck Accident Victims

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has committed to covering the medical expenses of victims involved in a tragic truck accident near Karu Bridge on the Abuja-Keffi Expressway. The accident, which occurred on Wednesday, resulted in multiple casualties.

Minister Expresses Sympathy and Orders Immediate Medical Care

In a statement released on Thursday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike extended his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured that those injured would receive the best possible treatment.

Earlier reports confirmed by the FCT Emergency Management Department indicated that 10 people lost their lives, while 30 others sustained severe burns and are currently receiving medical care.

Following the incident, Wike directed the Mandate Secretary on Health and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, to oversee the medical treatment of the victims. According to the statement, she remained at the Asokoro District Hospital overnight to ensure adequate care for the 17 casualties brought in.

Breakdown of Victims’ Medical Conditions

Providing an update, Wike stated that of the 17 victims admitted, seven were transferred to the National Hospital for further treatment. Six individuals with minor injuries were successfully treated, while three others, suffering from severe burns, inhalation complications, and crush injuries, are still receiving medical attention. Tragically, one patient with third-degree burns succumbed despite resuscitation efforts.

“The accident was avoidable, and it is deeply saddening that lives were lost and properties destroyed,” Wike said.

Call for Stricter Road Safety Measures

The FCT Minister urged road users, particularly drivers of heavy-duty vehicles, to strictly adhere to speed limits and traffic regulations to prevent similar tragedies. He also called on the Federal Road Safety Corps and other relevant agencies to strengthen enforcement of traffic laws to ensure road safety.
