The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) Nigeria has firmly refuted claims circulating on social media that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates has been cancelled. In an official statement released via WAEC’s verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, July 20, the Council described the reports as false and misleading.
According to the viral press release dated Saturday, July 19, which has been widely shared online, the Federal Ministry of Education in collaboration with WAEC had allegedly nullified all examinations due to rampant examination malpractice, coordinated leaks of question papers, and the unauthorized digital dissemination of exam materials.

However, WAEC has categorically dismissed the claim, stating that the alleged press statement did not originate from the Council and should be disregarded. The examination body emphasized that the 2025 WASSCE has not been cancelled, and the marking of scripts has just been concluded, with results expected to be released on or before Monday, August 4, 2025.
“The spurious press statement being circulated did not emanate from the Council,” WAEC stated. “Though the source of the information cannot be ascertained, the Council is certain that the false claim is being peddled by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the Council to disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination.”
WAEC also used the opportunity to remind the general public and all stakeholders that authentic information from the Council is only shared via its verified social media accounts and accredited media outlets across the country. All official press releases, WAEC added, are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
In light of the misinformation, the Council urged candidates, parents, schools, and the general public to remain calm and ignore the fabricated announcement.
“We call on the public to disregard the said publication in its entirety,” the statement concluded.
WAEC’s swift response aims to quell growing confusion and anxiety among the over 1.5 million students who participated in the recently concluded school examination across Nigeria.
The Council is expected to release an official timeline for result access and further instructions for candidates once preparations are complete.
For accurate and updated information, WAEC advises the public to monitor its official channels only.
