Veteran gospel juju musician Dele Ajayi, also known as ‘Dele Blacko’, is getting ready for the release of his eagerly awaited EP Ojumo Ire — a vibrant blend of rhythm, faith, and celebration that promises to captivate gospel and juju music lovers alike.
The new project, which features acclaimed Nigerian gospel stars Dare Melody and Segun Ajidara, marks another major milestone in Blacko’s illustrious 35-year career.
Blacko was born in Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti State, and raised in Lagos, he discovered his musical calling early in life. Growing up in a family of six, he began leading church choirs and producing music at just 14. His influences span African music royalty, including King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Fela Kuti, and Haruna Ishola.
According to Blacko, “Music is a natural gift from God” to him,”. “Growing up in church taught me discipline and the power of music to touch hearts. That’s why I’ve stayed true to my calling,” he said.
After years of honing his craft in Canada, Blacko returned to Nigeria in what he describes as a divinely inspired move. “There’s no place like home. My genre has a wider audience here, and I believe God’s purpose for me abroad was fulfilled. Since returning, I’ve been more active musically and spiritually.”
Currently serving as choirmaster at the Celestial Church (KOK Parish) while performing actively on stage, Blacko has earned a reputation for balancing ministry with a vibrant music career. His past projects, including the 7-track Blackomania and the 10-track Hymnal According to Dele Blacko, have drawn praise for their spiritual depth and rich juju rhythms.
With Ojumo Ire, Blacko aims to deliver an uplifting listening experience that fuses juju’s infectious grooves with the soul-stirring power of gospel. Filming has already wrapped for one of the EP’s standout tracks, hinting at visually compelling releases alongside the music.
“I want to put out music that will still reign long after I’m gone,” he reflects. “My greatest joy is seeing people smile, dance, and feel blessed through my songs.”
From sharing the stage with King Sunny Ade to leading worship that unites congregations, Dele Blacko continues to bridge the sacred and the celebratory. With Ojumo Ire set to drop soon, fans can expect nothing short of a masterpiece that uplifts the spirit while getting the feet moving.
