Nigerian comedian Brain Jotter is being subjected to online speculation over unconfirmed allegations linking him with his colleague Ekwutos concerning a claim involving an abortion. Up until this point, no comment has been made by either party, let alone the press; and rumours circulated without the help of any credible news outlet.
The rumours surfaced on social media, with vague hints that a personal advancement was brewing, which subsequently got attention from fans and blogs. Some alleged that there was a quarrel between the two comedians, and one third party was drawn into a messy abortion story. Details are, however, unclear, and most things being shared seem to point toward hearsay.
Brain Jotter nor Ekwutos has not made a public statement on the rumour, and no legal actions, interviews, or verified posts exist confirming any wilful acts of wrongdoing. Very close friends of both parties have also not said anything or have avoided talking about the issue altogether.
This is the kind of situation that portrays the volatile nature of social media, wherein a rumor could very quickly become a trending topic-without much regard to the fact basis of said rumor. Social narratives, however, are now shaping culture, with the result that public personalities sometimes find themselves being forced into responding to otherwise baseless accusations.
For now, it will be wise to remain skeptical towards such allegations until facts emerge. It would be unverified and speculative without confirmation. Unto either of the parties discusses the issue, or credible reporters illuminate it, it would most likely be a rash — and damaging — characterisation to make.
For now, the fans and the public are advised to stay away from propagating unconfirmed information and give the concerned parties room for due process, should the situation develop further.
