The United States Diplomatic Mission in Nigeria has lauded the Nigerian Government and security forces following the arrest of two wanted leaders of the terror group Ansaru.
In a statement posted on its official X handle, the Mission commended the operation, describing it as a milestone in the nation’s counterterrorism efforts.
“We commend the Nigerian Government and security forces on the successful arrest of wanted Ansaru leaders, Mahmud Muhammad Usman (aka Abu Bara’a) and Mahmud al-Nigeri (aka Mallam Mamuda). This is a significant forward in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and extremism,” the Mission stated.
The arrests are seen as a boost to Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insurgency and violent extremism, particularly in the North West and North Central regions where Ansaru has been linked to kidnappings, ambushes, and attacks on civilians and security personnel.
The U.S. Mission is well known for its continued support for Nigeria in tackling terrorism, pledging deeper collaboration in intelligence sharing, security training, and counter-extremism initiatives.
The development marks a critical success in dismantling Ansaru’s leadership structure, though sustained vigilance will be required to consolidate the gains and prevent regrouping by the group’s remnants.
