Trump Doubles Down on Third Term Ambitions

President Donald Trump has intensified speculation about seeking an unprecedented third presidential term, firmly stating “I’m not joking” during a recent NBC News phone interview when questioned about previous hints at extending his time in office beyond constitutional limits.

“There are methods which you could do it,” Trump declared, marking his most definitive statement yet on potentially circumventing the 22nd Amendment, which restricts presidents to two terms.

The 78-year-old commander-in-chief elaborated while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, suggesting that public demand drives his consideration. “We have almost four years to go and that’s a long time but despite that, so many people are saying you’ve got to run again. They love the job we’re doing,” Trump remarked, seemingly attributing the push to his political base.

When pressed about potentially refusing to vacate the White House on January 20, 2029, Trump deflected, saying: “I’m not looking at that, but I’ll tell you, I have had more people ask me to have a third term.”

Trump disclosed to NBC that specific strategies have been presented to him. When asked if Vice President JD Vance might run and then step aside in his favor, Trump confirmed, “that’s one” method, adding cryptically that “there are others” without providing details.

Constitutional experts note the significant hurdles to amending the Constitution. Such a change would require either a two-thirds majority in both congressional chambers—which Republicans currently lack—or a constitutional convention called by two-thirds of states. Either path would then need ratification from three-quarters of state legislatures.

No constitutional convention has ever been successfully convened in American history. All 27 amendments to date have originated through congressional approval.

Despite these obstacles, the movement has found some legislative support. In January, Tennessee Republican Representative Andy Ogles introduced a House joint resolution proposing a constitutional amendment that would permit presidents to serve up to three terms.

Trump’s presidency has already been marked by extraordinary assertions of executive authority, including appointing Elon Musk to lead government restructuring efforts.
