U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed anger toward Russian President Vladimir Putin over his recent remarks about Ukraine’s leadership. Trump’s comments came after Putin suggested that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky should be replaced as part of a transitional government.
Trump’s Reaction to Putin’s Comments
In an interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump stated:
“If I feel we’re in the midst of a negotiation, you could say that I was very angry, pissed off, when Putin started getting into Zelenskyy’s credibility, because that’s not going in the right direction.”
He warned that Putin’s demand for new leadership in Ukraine could prolong the war, making a peace deal harder to achieve.
Trump Threatens Economic Sanctions on Russia
Trump also threatened to impose secondary tariffs on Russian oil if ceasefire negotiations failed, stating:
“If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault — which it might not be — but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia.”
His proposed sanctions include:
- A 25% tariff on Russian oil
- A ban on companies doing business in the U.S. if they buy Russian oil
- Tariffs ranging from 25% to 50% on Russian oil exports
Trump said these tariffs would take effect within a month if no ceasefire deal is reached.
A Shift in Trump’s Stance on Putin
Trump’s harsh tone toward Putin marks a shift from his previous approach, where he often spoke favorably about the Russian leader. His latest remarks signal a tougher stance on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a move that could impact global geopolitics.
Moscow has not yet responded to Trump’s comments. However, Trump also criticized Zelensky last month, calling him a “dictator” and questioning his approval ratings in Ukraine.
Trump confirmed that he plans to speak with Putin later this week, a conversation that could influence the ongoing war and diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire.
