The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced significant progress in ongoing military operations against insurgency, terrorism, and other criminal activities across the country. Over the past week, troops have neutralized several terrorists, apprehended their collaborators, rescued kidnapped victims, and dismantled oil theft operations.
Successful Counter-Terrorism Operations
Speaking in Abuja, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, provided updates on various military engagements from March 10 to March 20, 2025. He highlighted joint efforts between the Nigerian military, hybrid forces, the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and other security agencies in combating threats.
“The Nigerian military conducted a series of fighting and confidence-building patrols, raids, ambushes, clearance missions, and search-and-rescue operations, leading to significant successes,” Kangye stated.
During these operations, several terrorists were neutralized, while their collaborators and gunrunners were arrested. Additionally, troops handed over rehabilitated terrorists to the Borno State Government.
Clampdown on Oil Theft in the South-South
In the Niger Delta, security forces cracked down on illegal oil activities, preventing theft valued at approximately ₦461.7 million. The military seized:
- 247,629 litres of stolen crude oil
- 198,374 litres of illegally refined diesel (AGO)
- 36 crude oil cooking ovens and 42 dugout pits
- 28 boats, 33 storage tanks, 65 drums, and 21 illegal refining sites
Troops also confiscated tricycles, motorcycles, mobile phones, and vehicles linked to oil theft operations. Seventeen individuals involved in these activities were arrested.
Arms and Ammunition Seized
Security forces recovered a substantial cache of weapons, including:
- AK-47 rifles
- Locally fabricated guns and pistols
- Dane guns and pump-action rifles
- Rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) tubes
- Assorted 7.62mm ammunition and RPG bombs
Operations in the Northeast: Terrorists Surrender
Troops under Operation Hadin Kai recorded significant gains in Borno and Yobe states, as multiple terrorists, including men, women, and children, surrendered. Security forces also conducted successful raids in areas such as Gwoza, Dikwa, Chibok, Bama, and Monguno.
Recovered items included AK-47 rifles, IEDs, motorcycles, and unexploded ordnance.
Northwest Operations: Terrorists Neutralized
Under Operation Fansan Yamma, troops launched offensives in Kaduna and Zamfara states, neutralizing several terrorists and capturing others. A senior terrorist fighter, Babangida, was eliminated in an ambush in Kaura Namoda, Zamfara State.
In Sokoto and Kaduna states, joint forces conducted fighting patrols, leading to the seizure of AK-47 rifles, ammunition, and motorcycles.
Anti-Kidnapping Efforts in the FCT and Edo State
In Abuja and Edo State, security forces arrested three kidnappers and rescued two hostages. Troops recovered a locally made rifle, live cartridges, and ₦17,900 in cash.
Southeast Operations Target IPOB/ESN Militants
Troops under Operation UDO KA engaged in clashes with IPOB/ESN fighters in Anambra, Ebonyi, and Imo states. Some militants were neutralized, while others were arrested. Recovered items included explosives, live cartridges, and firearms.
Joint military and NDLEA operations in Enugu and Anambra states also led to multiple arrests and the seizure of arms.
Commitment to National Security
Major General Kangye assured Nigerians that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to protecting lives and property. He emphasized that all arrested suspects and confiscated items have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action.
“The military will continue to uphold its constitutional duties in line with the Rules of Engagement and the Code of Conduct for Internal Security Operations,” he affirmed.
