A tragic incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters in Cross River State when a police inspector, Effiong Bassey, allegedly opened fire, killing one person and injuring two others.
Sources revealed that Bassey had just returned from night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank when he began displaying erratic behavior. Despite attempts to calm him, he refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle and barricaded the station’s entrance, preventing movement in and out.
Without warning, he fired at bystanders, hitting three individuals. One of the victims, 41-year-old Ijeoma Wilson Obot, succumbed to her injuries, while the other two—Charles Mkpang and an unidentified individual—are currently receiving medical treatment and are reportedly in stable condition.
The Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, Ugbo Irene, confirmed that security teams acted swiftly to disarm and arrest Bassey. He is currently in custody, and an investigation is underway.
Following the incident, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 6, alongside the Cross River State Police Command Management Team, visited the injured victims in the hospital. The AIG also provided financial support for their medical care and assured the public that justice would be served.
