President Bola Tinubu’s administration is brushing off the recently released FBI and DEA documents tied to the president’s past in the United States. According to Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the documents are simply a rehash of decades-old information.

“These are not new revelations. They’ve been public for over 20 years,” Onanuga told journalists, adding that Tinubu has never been convicted of any crime, nor indicted by U.S. authorities. “This is just recycled material being weaponized by political enemies ahead of 2027.”

The reports, released by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), detail investigations from the 1990s that involved financial transactions linked to individuals in Tinubu’s orbit. Critics argue that while Tinubu wasn’t charged, the documents raise ethical questions.

But for Onanuga and the presidency, the release is a distraction.

“The documents add nothing new to the public record,” he said. “They don’t change the fact that Tinubu was elected by Nigerians. People know his story — and they still gave him their mandate.”

Online, reactions are split. Supporters say the controversy is political noise, brought up to derail the president’s reform agenda. Others believe Nigerians deserve full clarity on the nature of Tinubu’s past dealings abroad.

For now, the government is standing firm: no apologies, no backtracking, no scandal — just old news.
