As he concludes his two-year term as ECOWAS chair, President Bola Tinubu formally declared on X (previously Twitter) that he has handed over leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone.

In a post shared Sunday evening, Tinubu wrote:

“Today, I handed over ECOWAS leadership to my brother, H.E. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra-Leone.

I do so with a deep sense of fulfilment and optimism for the future of West Africa.

We must remain resolute in our shared mission to deepen integration, protect our people, and build a united region.”

At the end of the 67th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government in Abuja, the official handover took place. Tinubu called his tenure at the top “a profound honour and privilege”. He promised optimism for the bloc’s future and thanked the member nations for their confidence.

In his speech, Tinubu discussed the difficulties ECOWAS had experienced under his direction, such as regional military takeovers and political unrest. In order to achieve the region’s objectives of peace, security, and economic success, he called for ongoing member-state cooperation.

Tinubu’s seamless transition highlights Nigeria’s dedication to West African democracy and institutional continuity, marking a critical juncture for ECOWAS as it manages security threats and seeks to strengthen member state integration.
