Tinubu Appoints Akin-Olugbade as Chairman of NISO, Announces Board Members

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed executive and non-executive board members for the newly established Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), a key institution under the Electricity Act of 2023.

Key Appointments

The president has approved the appointment of Dr. Adesegun Akin-Olugbade as Chairman of the Board, while Engineer Abdu Mohammed Bello has been named as Managing Director.

Additionally, four Executive Directors have been appointed:

  • Engineer Nafisatu Asabe Ali – Systems Operation
  • Engineer Shehu Abba-Aliyu – Systems Planning
  • Dr. Edmund Eje – Market Operations
  • Mr. Babajide Ibironke – Finance and Corporate Services

For Non-Executive Directors, the following individuals have been appointed:

  • Engineer Lamu Audu – Representing Generation
  • Mrs. Folake Soetan – Representing Distribution
  • Mr. Tajudeen Giwa-Osagie – Market Expert
  • Engineer Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz – Representing Transmission
  • Alhaji Mahmuda Mamman – Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Power

Selection and Regulatory Framework

The appointments align with the Electricity Act of 2023 and followed a rigorous selection process. A statement from the presidency noted that the process was conducted by the Independent Board Nomination Committee (IBNC) in collaboration with Phillips Consulting Limited, based on a memorandum submitted by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) will finalize the recruitment process.

The Role of NISO in Power Sector Reforms

The establishment of NISO fulfills a major provision of the Electricity Act (2023), which mandates the unbundling of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) into two separate entities:

  1. Transmission System Provider (TSP)
  2. Independent System Operator (ISO)

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) officially established NISO on April 30, 2024, making it responsible for overseeing power transmission operations independently.

The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) are equal shareholdersin NISO, ensuring government oversight and strategic management of Nigeria’s electricity transmission framework.

This development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing power sector reforms aimed at improving electricity supply, efficiency, and market competitiveness.
