Selection and Regulatory Framework
The appointments align with the Electricity Act of 2023 and followed a rigorous selection process. A statement from the presidency noted that the process was conducted by the Independent Board Nomination Committee (IBNC) in collaboration with Phillips Consulting Limited, based on a memorandum submitted by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The National Council on Privatisation (NCP) will finalize the recruitment process.
The Role of NISO in Power Sector Reforms
The establishment of NISO fulfills a major provision of the Electricity Act (2023), which mandates the unbundling of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) into two separate entities:
- Transmission System Provider (TSP)
- Independent System Operator (ISO)
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) officially established NISO on April 30, 2024, making it responsible for overseeing power transmission operations independently.
The Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) and the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) are equal shareholdersin NISO, ensuring government oversight and strategic management of Nigeria’s electricity transmission framework.
This development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s ongoing power sector reforms aimed at improving electricity supply, efficiency, and market competitiveness.
