The suspended Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule, has expressed support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to impose a state of emergency in Rivers State.
Amaewhule described the move as being in the best interest of the state and urged residents to cooperate with the newly appointed Sole Administrator, Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas (Rtd).
In a letter signed on behalf of the state Assembly and distributed to journalists in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Amaewhule acknowledged the gravity of the situation and emphasized the need for compliance.
“On behalf of the Rivers State House of Assembly, I wish to bring to your attention the President’s declaration of a state of emergency, made in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended),” the letter read in part.
He blamed the state’s political crisis on the governor’s alleged disregard for court judgments, failure to uphold constitutional responsibilities, and breaches of his oath of office.
“As an Assembly, we assure our constituents that we will respect this declaration, even though it was not the outcome we initially sought,” he added.
Amaewhule, however, acknowledged that the President acted in the nation’s best interest and urged Rivers residents to remain calm as the Sole Administrator takes over governance.
