In a landmark moment for Nigerian sports, the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, announced via the official X (formerly Twitter) handle of the Nigerian Presidency that, for the first time in Nigeria’s history, the Super Falcons have been fully paid all their allowances and match bonuses — up to and including their upcoming final match against Morocco on July 26, 2025.

The payments were processed through the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and disbursed ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final, ensuring that players, coaches, and team officials can focus solely on the match without distractions or disputes.

“This is more than payment — it is policy in motion,” said Dikko. “It’s proof of a new era in Nigerian sports under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, where our athletes are no longer celebrated only in victory but respected in process.”

The Chairman emphasized that this act signals the beginning of a culture of trust and shared prosperity, as envisioned in the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

The announcement also extended to the D’Tigress, Nigeria’s reigning Basketball African champions and Olympic quarter-finalists, who are set to begin their campaign for a fifth African title at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Côte d’Ivoire (July 25 – August 3). Dikko confirmed that the basketball team will receive improved allowances, welfare packages, and bonuses for the full duration of the tournament.

“They deserve nothing less. We are investing in their confidence, welfare, and winning spirit,” Dikko stated.

He reiterated that this is the new standard of sports administration in Nigeria — where athletes receive their entitlements promptly and fairly, as long as resources are available.

“What you earn, you will be paid. What you deserve, you will receive. This is how we build trust. This is how we honour our heroes.”

Dikko also extended heartfelt congratulations to the Super Falcons for reaching the final, where they aim to clinch a record-extending 10th African title.

“The incredible Falcons continue to inspire Nigerians on and off the pitch,” he wrote. “Mission X is on. Let’s finish strong.”

The announcement has been met with widespread praise from fans, stakeholders, and commentators across the country, hailing it as a pivotal step toward professionalizing sports administration and restoring dignity to Nigeria’s sporting heroes.
