Super Eagles head coach, Èric Chelle, has voiced his frustration following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead in the 73rd minute with a well-placed header from Ola Aina’s cross. However, the Super Eagles were denied victory after a last-minute goal from Tawanda Chireda secured a draw for Zimbabwe in their Group C qualifying match.
Chelle’s Reaction
Speaking at the post-match briefing, Chelle admitted he had expected his team to capitalize on their chances in the first half and secure a win.
“I thought we would score in the first half and win the match. We made some mistakes, and Zimbabwe equalized,” he said.
He acknowledged that Nigeria created numerous scoring opportunities but failed to convert them, which ultimately cost them the win. However, he reassured fans that the team would analyze their performance and make the necessary adjustments for future matches.
Zimbabwe’s Perspective
Zimbabwe’s head coach, Michael Nees, was pleased with his team’s performance, emphasizing their tactical approach and resilience.
“We came prepared, knowing Nigeria’s strength. We played with strategy to create chances, and that resulted in the last-minute equalizer,” he said.
Nees also noted that the group remains unpredictable, leaving room for any outcome in the qualifiers.
