A helicopter battling the devastating wildfires in South Korea crashed on Wednesday, killing the pilot, according to the fire department. Authorities are scrambling to contain the massive blazes that have already claimed multiple lives.
The helicopter went down in a mountainous area of Uiseong County while attempting to suppress the flames, a Gyeongbuk Fire Service official reported. “There was one pilot on board, who was declared dead at the scene,” the official confirmed.
Meanwhile, efforts continue to safeguard historical sites from the spreading fire. In Andong, workers hurriedly transported packed Buddha statues and other valuables from Bongjeong Temple, a UNESCO-listed Korean Mountain Area Temple, fearing the flames could reach the site.
The ongoing wildfire crisis has already resulted in at least 18 deaths, making it one of the worst outbreaks South Korea has faced. Officials have described the destruction as “unprecedented,” with emergency responders working tirelessly to bring the situation under control.
