Vice President Kashim Shettima has called for immediate and decisive action to tackle malnutrition in Nigeria, urging members of the National Council on Nutrition (NCN), along with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), to adopt a comprehensive and coordinated approach.
Malnutrition: A Threat to National Security and Economic Growth
Shettima emphasized that malnutrition is not just a health concern but a critical issue that impacts national security and economic productivity. He warned that without tangible results, discussions and policy meetings would remain ineffective.
“We are dealing with a crisis that threatens both our national security and economic productivity. Malnutrition is not just a health issue; it is a silent emergency that affects cognitive development, weakens our workforce, and slows down the engine of national growth,” he stated.
To address this challenge, the Vice President stressed the need for a multisectoral response, involving MDAs, development partners, and private sector stakeholders working together to find lasting solutions.
Evidence-Based Policies and Government-Led Funding
Acknowledging the importance of data-driven decision-making, Shettima insisted that all policies and programs must be guided by practical, evidence-based assessments. He also underscored the need for the government to take the lead in financing interventions, stating that no initiative can succeed without adequate government funding.
Strengthening National Efforts on Food and Nutrition
Earlier, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu, highlighted the council’s role in advancing food and nutrition policies. He described the meeting as an opportunity to evaluate progress and reinforce national efforts to improve nutritional health.
“This council serves as a platform for assessing and driving forward the national agenda on nutrition. It also represents a crucial checkpoint in our efforts to enhance food security, improve health outcomes, and foster stronger collaboration across all sectors,” Bagudu stated.
Shettima’s call for urgent action reflects the government’s commitment to addressing malnutrition and ensuring a healthier, more productive population.
