In a political move that may shift dynamics in Kano politics, Senator Sumaila Kawu has left the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kawu, who represents Kano South in the Senate, announced his defection at a press conference, citing alignment with the development priorities of the APC and the need to better serve his constituents. He said the decision wasn’t made lightly but became necessary after what he described as “deep reflection and wide consultations.”

“The people of Kano South deserve effective representation that connects directly with federal power and resources,” Kawu said. “Joining the APC provides that pathway.”

The senator’s departure is seen as a setback for the NNPP, which has gained ground in Kano State over recent years. However, Kawu said his decision was based on what he believes is best for his constituents and for long-term political stability.

Kawu, a seasoned politician and former aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, also hinted that more defections could follow as the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape.
