Senator Shehu Sani, a veteran politician, has urged WhatsApp to respond to recent reports of widespread monitoring in a fair and open way. He has also urged the messaging giant to take strong and transparent steps to address claims that it has compromised user data for intelligence agencies.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the senator conveyed his concerns:
“Now that ‘WhatsApp’ is accused or alleged of spying by compromising users’ communication details to some intelligence agencies, the company needs to transparently and strongly address this issue. This will allay the fears of billions of people around the world who have developed a sense of safety and security whenever they use the app.”
Sani’s remark addressed mounting public concern about allegations that some intelligence services might have gained access to private messages on the site without users’ knowledge or agreement.
The senator underlined the necessity for WhatsApp to rebuild trust by providing a detailed explanation of whether such data sharing took place, who had the right to do so, and the relevant legal framework.
As users and regulators call for greater accountability from internet corporations, the senator’s action is in line with international discussions about digital rights and data security. The problem has raised calls for regulatory investigation and possible legislative action in Nigeria, where WhatsApp is still a popular communication medium.
