Suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara has expressed confidence that the ongoing political turmoil in Rivers State will ultimately strengthen rather than weaken its people.
Fubara made these remarks while welcoming Muslim leaders from 20 Islamic organizations, including the Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, during an Eid-el-Fitri Sallah visit at his private residence in Port Harcourt.
“This season is one of love, sharing, and sacrifice. You have come to share in our pain and have made a great sacrifice through your prayers,” Fubara told the delegation. “As Christians, we believe that everything happens for a purpose, and I strongly believe that this situation is leading us toward a greater purpose.”
According to a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, Fubara acknowledged that many might feel disheartened by the current political tensions but suggested that forces beyond human comprehension might be at work.
“No matter what we see, we must remain steadfast. In all things, we give glory to Almighty God. I believe that, in the end, we will emerge stronger,” he stated.
Commitment to Justice and Equality
The suspended governor reaffirmed his dedication to justice and equality, emphasizing that his administration envisions a society where no one faces oppression.
“We believe in egalitarianism, and if our beliefs bring us some pain, so be it. The most important thing is that we stand on the side of truth and righteousness,” Fubara declared.
He expressed regret at being unable to formally reach out to the Muslim community during their celebrations but promised to strengthen the relationship between religious groups and the government once the current uncertainties are resolved.
Drawing wisdom from religious history, Fubara encouraged patience and perseverance: “If God could be patient with Noah to allow even the snail to enter the Ark, then patience remains an essential virtue in our struggle.”
Warning Against Provocations
Fubara cautioned his supporters and Rivers people against those attempting to instigate violence through provocative actions. He warned about certain elements seeking to destabilize the state.
“Their goal is to create problems and deny people their means of livelihood. We will not allow that. We will continue to operate peacefully and respect constituted authority to ensure that our state remains a model for others in Nigeria,” he emphasized.
Muslim Community Pledges Support
Speaking for the Muslim delegation, Alhaji Nasir Awhelebe Uhor declared solidarity with Fubara, assuring him of their prayers and support throughout the state’s political challenges.
Uhor revealed that most Muslims in Rivers State support Fubara due to his inclusive governance approach and recognition of the Islamic faith, contrasting this with the previous administration that had declared Rivers a “100% Christian State.” He noted that Fubara acknowledges Rivers as Christian-majority while maintaining inclusiveness.
The Muslim leader encouraged Fubara to remain steadfast, referencing the Islamic belief that Allah rewards patience and that present challenges align with Islamic teachings, where the Creator tests people through wealth, power, and authority.
Uhor also appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to reconsider the emergency rule in Rivers State and restore Fubara’s full authority, emphasizing that the governor had been performing effectively despite the ongoing crisis.
The visit concluded with prayers for Governor Fubara, his family, Rivers State, and Nigeria.
