On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced an increase in the manufacturing of the ‘Oreshnik missile’ on X (previously Twitter), describing it as a revolutionary weapon that could circumvent all existing defense systems in the globe.
According to Putin:
“Russia has accelerated the production of ‘Oreshnik’ Missile. Oreshnik can not be intercepted by any Defence System in The World.”
Putin highlighted the Oreshnik’s sophisticated qualities and strategic importance in his tweet, calling it “unstoppable.” The Oreshnik is a hypersonic, intermediate-range ballistic missile with speeds exceeding Mach 10.
The Oreshnik has been praised by Russian officials for its ability to outmaneuver and overwhelm air defenses since making its combat debut in November 2024 during an attack on Dnipro, Ukraine.
Putin’s drive to develop the Oreshnik in large quantities highlights a strategic shift towards hypersonic deterrence, a theory intended to guarantee Russian dominance and deterrence without resorting to nuclear weapons.
The advance may be as much psychological warfare as weapon innovation, according to some observers, who see the missile as a leap forward in innovation. This is because the missile repackages current ballistics technology to project force.
The Oreshnik missile invention is changing the geopolitical calculation in Europe and beyond, with defense systems being quickly reevaluated and diplomatic channels being mobilized.
