President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja on Thursday, August 14, for a diplomatic trip covering Japan and Brazil, with a stopover in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, en route.

According to a statement posted on the Presidency’s official X handle, the President will participate in the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), taking place in Yokohama from August 20 to 22. This year’s theme, “Co-create Innovative Solutions with Africa”, will spotlight Africa’s economic transformation, improvements in the business environment and institutions, and the role of private investment and innovation in building resilient, sustainable societies.

Beyond attending thematic plenary sessions, President Tinubu will engage in bilateral meetings and hold discussions with chief executives of Japanese companies investing in Nigeria.

Launched in 1993 by the Japanese government and co-hosted by the United Nations (UNDP), African Union Commission, and World Bank, TICAD is a high-level policy platform alternating between Japan and Africa every three years. The last edition was held in Tunisia in 2022.

Following the conference, the President will travel to Brasilia, the capital of Brazil, for a two-day state visit from August 24 to 25, at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

In Brazil, the Nigerian leader will hold bilateral talks with his host, attend a business forum with Brazilian investors, and oversee the signing of agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at deepening cooperation between both nations.

The President will be accompanied by a delegation of key ministers and senior government officials tasked with exploring fresh opportunities for economic and diplomatic collaboration.
