The Nigerian Presidency has dismissed speculation that Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank, poses a political threat to the Bola Tinubu administration. The clarification comes amid growing public interest in Adesina’s work and leadership style, which some observers have contrasted with the current administration’s performance.
This statement came in response to Adesina’s comments regarding Nigeria’s economic performance, which drew considerable attention after being made at a policy forum in Abuja on May 2, 2025
Officials from the Presidency stated on Tuesday that Adesina remains a respected technocrat and that his international standing should not be confused with political ambition. They made it clear that the government does not view him as a rival or an emerging figure in Nigeria’s political landscape.
“We do not consider Dr. Adesina a political threat,” a senior aide said, downplaying the speculation. “This administration is focused on delivering on its mandate, not chasing shadows.” The statement appears aimed at shutting down rumors before they gain momentum, especially with political tensions simmering as Nigeria faces economic and security challenges.
Adesina, for his part, has made no public indication of any interest in contesting political office
