Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) over its recent proposal to review and increase the salaries of political office holders in Nigeria.

In a statement posted on his verified X handle on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Obi described the move as “prioritising leaders’ greed over basic welfare,” arguing that the decision reflects insensitivity to the economic realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

“The recent proposal by the RMAFC to increase the salaries of political leaders is causing widespread anger and bitterness among Nigerians, and we share the concerns of many who question the necessity and timing of this proposal,” he wrote.

Obi condemned the plan as “a shameless grab for more at the expense of Nigeria’s struggling majority,” adding that the suggested “over 100% salary increase” for politicians was unjustifiable given the current hardship in the country.

He further stressed that political office should be about service and not wealth accumulation, urging authorities to prioritise the welfare of civil servants and security personnel, especially police officers, who he said remain “grossly underpaid and overworked.”

“The RMAFC’s reckless haste in prioritising the greed of politicians over the desperate needs of the masses is not only provocative but scandalous,” Obi stated, calling on the government to redirect its focus to improving the living conditions of workers who form the backbone of the nation.

The Labour Party chieftain concluded by urging the RMAFC to abandon the proposed salary increase and instead channel resources toward policies that address the welfare of struggling Nigerians.
