Through his X (formerly Twitter) account, former presidential candidate and Labour Party leader Peter Obi has disclosed a tragic occurrence in Lagos State. He claims that on the morning of June 24, his younger brother’s company property in Ikeja was broken into and demolished.
In the post, Obi recounted that his youngest brother called him in a panic on the morning of June 24 to tell him that a bunch of people had broken into his company’s property in Ikeja, Lagos, and were tearing it down.
Security guards told the man (the complainant), who had just arrived from Port Harcourt, that the building was being demolished and would not allow him to enter the premises.
Even the fact that this demolition had begun over the weekend was disclosed to him. Being a Nigerian who values peace, he quickly began preparing to go to court, unsure of what may have led to this, but they hurriedly and unrestrainedly proceeded to destroy his property.
Obi also advised in his post that “any society where lawlessness overrides the rule of law is not destined to be a haven for investors. Recent reports showing that Nigeria’s human rights indicators have worsened merely highlight severe shortfalls in government protection for civil liberties, personal security, and basic living standards.”
Civil society organizations and social media users responded strongly to the incident, with many urging the Lagos State Government and law enforcement to step in, look into the situation, and demand accountability.
As the scandal spreads, more people are calling on authorities to safeguard residents from arbitrary action, preserve property rights, and guarantee openness in the judicial system.
