The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) believes Peter Obi doesn’t need a political alliance to win a presidential election against Bola Tinubu—what he needs is a free and fair election.

Speaking on the future of Nigeria’s democracy, the NLC dismissed the idea that Obi must join forces with other parties to stand a chance. According to the union, Obi already has a broad base of support, especially among youth and urban voters who are disillusioned with the current political class. But they say that no amount of popularity will matter if the election process itself is compromised.

The NLC’s message is simple: give Nigerians a clean election, and the result will speak for itself. Coalitions, while helpful in theory, are not a substitute for electoral integrity. The focus, they argue, should be on pressuring the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure transparency and fairness. For them, the path to change is not through political horse-trading, but through protecting the people’s vote.
