Former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Prince Adewole Adebayo has revealed that prominent opposition leaders, Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar, currently in talks regarding their possible entrance into the SDP, ahead of the 2027 general election in Nigeria.

Speaking at a political forum in Abuja, Adebayo stated that both men have been in contact with the leadership of the SDP for several months, weighing a possible alignment as feelings run high concerning the dissatisfaction with the present crop of leadership from Nigeria’s two major parties – APC and PDP.

“There are talks. Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar; they are engaging with us,” Adebayo said. ” The idea is to build a credible alternative to the current system; the SDP is that platform.”

According to political analysts, it is yet to be seen whether the two leaders will give the talks their official consideration, but should they do so, this will signal a major political shake-up in Nigeria. The two leaders are indeed presidential contenders in 2023, with Obi representing the Labour Party while Atiku ran on behalf of the PDP.

Historians say the SDP historically remains important but has not gotten back into the
mainstream. Aligning with figures like Obi and Atiku will give it instant relevance as an election player.” People are tired of recycled politics,” Adebayo continued, “we are building something different – one that is issue-based, youth-focused, and national in outlook.”

It is not clear if the talks will materialize into any formal defection. However, as the 2027
elections draw near, Nigeria’s political realignment is probably just beginning.
