Oseloka Obaze, one of the closest political associates of Peter Obi and a respected figure within the Labour Party, has announced his resignation from the party, sparking fresh concerns over its internal stability and future. His decision comes after months of growing discontent over how the party has handled its internal affairs, especially during recent primary elections.

Obaze, who was the Labour Party’s 2017 governorship candidate in Anambra State and served as a top policy adviser to Peter Obi, cited a breakdown in party discipline, transparency, and leadership accountability. In his resignation letter, he expressed disappointment that the party, which once inspired hope for a new kind of politics, had fallen into the same traps it once criticized;flawed primaries, factionalism, and poor governance.

His departure has triggered mixed reactions among party faithful. Some see it as a necessary wake-up call for the Labour Party to put its house in order, while others worry it may signal a deeper fracture among Obi’s allies ahead of the 2027 elections. For many young Nigerians who rallied behind Obi and his vision of a new Nigeria, Obaze’s exit feels like another crack in a political project that once promised so much.
