You know that awkward moment when you wave at someone, thinking they’re looking at you, but they’re actually waving at the person behind you? Now imagine that… but with an entire football club mistakenly mourning a man who’s still alive.
Bulgarian top-flight team Arda Kardzhali found themselves in an own goal of epic proportions when they solemnly held a minute’s silence for former player Petko Ganchev before their match against Levski Sofia—only to realize later that Ganchev was, in fact, very much alive and presumably wondering why people were acting like he was a ghost.
With both teams lined up in the center circle, heads bowed, and a respectful hush over the stadium, it was a touching tribute—except for the small detail that Ganchev didn’t need one yet. Talk about peaking too soon!
Realizing their blunder before the game had even ended, Arda quickly took to Facebook to issue an apology faster than a striker chasing a loose ball.
“The management of PFC Arda would like to express a huge apology to former player Petko Ganchev and his relatives after the club received wrong information about his death,” the statement read.
Translation: “Oops, our bad, Petko! We swear we thought you were gone, but hey—glad you’re not!”
To smooth things over, the club added, “We wish Petko Ganchev many more years of good health and to enjoy the success of Arda.” A nice touch, but one can’t help but wonder—does this mean Ganchev gets to live twice? Maybe they should throw him a “Welcome Back to Life” party to make up for it.
Moral of the story? Always double-check your sources—especially when it involves announcing someone’s demise. And if you’re Petko Ganchev? Maybe check your pulse, just to be sure.
