Nigeria Police Scrap Law Dismissing Unmarried Pregnant Officers – AIG Baju

Abuja, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has officially scrapped laws mandating the dismissal of unmarried female police officers who become pregnant while in active service.

This was confirmed by Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Aishatu Baju, Nigeria’s most senior female police officer, during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday.

Baju stated that previous laws discriminating against women in the force have been deleted, ensuring greater gender equality within the police.

When reminded of the 2021 case of Omolola Olajide, an unmarried police corporal in Ekiti State who was dismissed for getting pregnant, Baju assured that such dismissals no longer occur under the current legal framework.

“Unmarried policewomen are no longer dismissed for getting pregnant while in service,” she said, emphasizing that the reforms align with modern standards of fairness and inclusivity.

The move marks a significant step in addressing gender discrimination within Nigeria’s law enforcement agencies, paving the way for greater inclusion and career protection for female officers.
