NDPHC to Boost National Grid with 375MW Egbema Power Plant by 2025

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has announced plans to inject 375 megawatts (MW) of electricity into Nigeria’s national grid upon the completion of the Egbema Power Plant by the end of 2025.

According to Jennifer Adighije, Managing Director and CEO of NDPHC, the project—currently 67% complete—is expected to significantly enhance power generation across the country. The contract for the plant was re-awarded in 2023to the Chinese Machinery and Engineering Company (CMEC), and the company remains committed to delivering it on schedule despite financial challenges in the power sector.

Funding and Sector Challenges

Adighije emphasized that one of the biggest hurdles to completing the project is the liquidity crisis affecting Nigeria’s power sector. The government currently owes over ₦4 trillion to Generation Companies (GenCos), making it difficult for them to pay for gas supply and maintain stable operations.

She urged the government to prioritize funding for the power sector, stating that clearing these debts would:

  • Ensure timely completion of power projects.
  • Improve electricity generation and distribution.
  • Provide affordable and reliable electricity to Nigerians.

Concerns Over Project Delays

During an inspection of the power plant, Hon. Victor Nwokolo, Chairman of the House Committee on Power, expressed frustration over the slow progress of the project, describing it as the most delayed among similar power plants.

He noted that legal disputes and funding issues had caused setbacks but expressed optimism that with proper financial support, the contractors could accelerate progress and meet the 2025 completion target.

Outlook

If completed as planned, the Egbema Power Plant will be a crucial addition to Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure, boosting power supply and reducing the country’s energy deficit. However, its success will depend on the government’s ability to resolve outstanding debts and provide adequate funding for ongoing energy projects.
