NCDC Deploys Emergency Response Teams to Combat Meningitis Outbreak in Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has sent emergency response teams to Kebbi, Sokoto, and Katsina States to tackle a growing outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis (CSM). The move comes as cases continue to rise, prompting urgent intervention to contain the disease and prevent further loss of life.

The Growing Threat

As of March 26, 2025, over 807 suspected cases of meningitis have been reported across 22 states, with 74 confirmed deaths. The Case Fatality Rate (CFR) stands at 9.2%, making the situation particularly concerning.

While several states have been affected, Kebbi, Katsina, and Sokoto have recorded the highest number of cases and fatalities. Reports indicate that sample collection rates in these areas are alarmingly low, making it harder to track and manage the outbreak effectively.

Swift Action from the NCDC

To curb the spread, the NCDC has deployed expert teams specializing in case management, infection control, and lumbar puncture techniques. These professionals will work closely with state health authorities to:

  • Strengthen case management and improve treatment protocols.
  • Enhance surveillance efforts to increase sample collection and early detection.
  • Implement infection prevention and control (IPC) measures in affected communities.
  • Educate the public on meningitis prevention and symptoms through risk communication campaigns.
  • Investigate the outbreak’s origin and recommend necessary public health interventions.

The response teams will initially be on the ground for 14 days, with the possibility of an extension if needed.

Public Health Advisory

NCDC Director General, Dr. Jide Idris, has urged the public to remain vigilant and take preventive measures, including:

  • Getting vaccinated where possible.
  • Avoiding overcrowded areas, as meningitis spreads easily in close quarters.
  • Practicing good hygiene, including regular handwashing.
  • Seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms like fever, stiff neck, severe headache, or sensitivity to light appear.

With rapid intervention and public cooperation, health authorities hope to bring the outbreak under control and prevent further loss of life. The NCDC reassures Nigerians that all efforts are being made to safeguard public health.
