Major General Abubakar Sadiq Mohammed Wase has officially taken over as the 44th General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 1 Division, Nigerian Army, and Sector 1 Joint Task Force, Operation FANSAN YAMMA.
The announcement was made in a statement by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations for the Division, Lieutenant Colonel Shuaib Umar, and shared via the Nigerian Army Headquarters’ official X handle on Wednesday, August 20, 2025.
According to the statement, the change of leadership followed recent postings and appointments approved by the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede. The colourful handing and taking over ceremony took place at the Division’s headquarters in Kaduna between Maj. Gen. Wase and his predecessor, Major General Mayirenso Saraso.
In his farewell remarks, General Saraso expressed gratitude to God and to the COAS for the opportunity to serve, while also appreciating officers and soldiers of the Division for their support during his tenure. He urged them to extend even greater cooperation to his successor for the success of the Division, the Nigerian Army, and the country at large.
The ceremony featured the signing of handing and taking over notes, decoration of the new GOC with the 1 Division insignia, the traditional handover of the command flag, and the hoisting of the new Division’s flag at the quarter guard to mark the beginning of a new era. The event also included a farewell address to troops by the outgoing GOC and group photographs.
