Lagos State Government has unveiled a traffic diversion plan set to last two months, as crucial repairs commence on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge along the inbound Marina/CMS corridor. The repairs, scheduled to run from March 19 to May 26, aim to enhance road safety and extend the lifespan of these critical infrastructures.
Road Closures and Restrictions
Announcing the development, Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that the section between the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and Bonny Camp Bridge leading to Independence Bridge will be inaccessible to motorists throughout the repair period.
Additionally, the Bonny Camp Underpass service lane (inbound Independence Bridge) will be closed, while the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open to facilitate movement.
Alternative Routes for Motorists
To ease congestion, the government has outlined alternative routes:
- Heading to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way: Motorists should use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, turn onto Akin Adesola Street, proceed to Falomo Roundabout, and then connect to Obafemi Awolowo Road towards Ring Road.
- Heading to Third Mainland Bridge from Ahmadu Bello Way: Use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, continue through Akin Adesola Street, then merge onto Alfred Rewane Road, connect to Osborne Road, and proceed to Ring Road.
- Heading to Inner Marina/CMS from Ahmadu Bello Way: Divert to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, turn onto Akin Adesola Street, proceed to Falomo Roundabout, and link Obafemi Awolowo Road to access JK Randle Road/King George V Road.
- Heading from Inner Marina/CMS to Ahmadu Bello Way: Traffic movement along this route will remain unaffected.
Traffic Management and Public Advisory
To mitigate disruptions, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officers will be stationed at key points to regulate movement and ensure smooth traffic flow.
Commissioner Osiyemi urged motorists to exercise patience and adhere to traffic guidelines, emphasizing that the project is part of the broader effort to improve the city’s road network. He reassured residents that the Federal Ministry of Works, through the Office of the Federal Controller of Works, Lagos, is overseeing the rehabilitation to ensure timely completion.
The government encourages commuters to plan their journeys in advance and stay updated on real-time traffic advisories for a smoother travel experience during the repair period.
