A gas explosion in Ijora Badia, Lagos, injured at least 15 persons on Sunday, including children. On the same day, in the afternoon, an explosion occurred at 12 Amosu Street, the cause being a leaking 25-kg gas cylinder in a small roadside shop. Once ignited, the fire spread rapidly, burning passers-by and damaging surrounding buildings.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service and other emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene. The injured were promptly given first aid and rushed to hospitals in the vicinity. Eyewitnesses reported chaotic scenes as residents tried to quench the flames before professionals arrived.
Since the incident, officials in Lagos State have once again emphasized the issue of safety in handling and storing gas cylinders, particularly in highly populous areas. Unregulated sales and inadequate infrastructure are often cited as factors behind avoidable accidents like this.
It illustrates a lack of public safety across urban Lagos, where unregulated informal businesses operate with almost no enforcement. The questions of safety now loom large over government authorities to implement a proper enforcement of safety measures as the residents heal and
investigation continues.
