Ahead of the October 2025 presidential election in Côte d’Ivoire, former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan announced on Monday, July 7, through his official X (formerly Twitter) account that he has joined members of the West African Elders Forum (WAEF) in Abidjan for a Pre-Election Mediation Mission.
In the post, he wrote: “Members of West African Elders Forum (@TheWAEF) Pre-Election Mediation Mission led by His Excellency Mr. Yayi Boni, former President of the Republic of Benin arrived in the Ivorian capital city, ahead of the scheduled Ivorian October 2025 Presidential election,” the statement read.
The former president added that the Forum plans to engage with key stakeholders in the country’s political landscape, including government officials, opposition figures, civil society groups, and electoral authorities. The aim, he emphasized, is to “strengthen democratic consolidation and ensure a violence-free electoral process.”
“In our planned engagements with different stakeholders, we are pleased to offer our support and encouragement to the nation’s consensus building efforts toward a peaceful, credible election in Cote d’Ivoire and democratic consolidation in the subregion,” he added.
The West African Elders Forum, which Jonathan chairs, has become a respected voice in the region for its mediation roles in previous political tensions and election-related crises. The group’s presence in Côte d’Ivoire signals international concern for stability in the West African nation, which has witnessed electoral unrest in previous polls.
Jonathan concluded his post by reiterating the Forum’s commitment to supporting democracy and peacebuilding across the subregion, adding that “credible elections are vital for sustained regional security and development.”
The October polls in Côte d’Ivoire are expected to be closely contested, and the involvement of international mediators is seen as a proactive step to forestall violence and uphold democratic standards.
