At least four Nigerian soldiers were killed when suspected Islamist fighters launched coordinated attacks on two military bases in northeastern Borno State, security sources told Reuters.
The attacks, carried out by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters, targeted an army base in Wajiroko and another in Wulgo, near the border with Cameroon. The insurgents reportedly set military equipment on fire during the assault.
Details of the Attack
- Wajiroko Base Attack: Around 9:00 PM GMT on Monday, insurgents overran the base, killing at least four soldiers and injuring several others, including the brigade commander.
- Wulgo Attack: Around the same time, militants launched an assault on another army formation. The number of casualties from this attack remains unknown.
Local militia member Makinta Modu said that Air Force fighter jets arrived around 10:30 PM GMT for reinforcement and killed many of the ISWAP fighters at Wajiroko. However, it remains unclear whether the military has fully regained control of the base.
Increasing Attacks in Borno State
Despite years of military offensives and internal factional clashes, Boko Haram and ISWAP have intensified attacks on both military and civilian targets in Borno State since the beginning of the year.
For over a decade, northeastern Nigeria has been plagued by insurgency, while kidnapping and banditry have escalated in the northwest, and separatist violence continues in the southeast. The Nigerian Army has not yet responded to requests for comment on the latest attacks.
