Amid ongoing diplomatic tensions with United States President Donald J. Trump, India’s defence production has surged to an unprecedented ₹1,50,590 crore in the 2024-25 fiscal year, marking an 18% increase over the previous year and a 90% jump since 2019-20, according to official government data.

In a post on its verified X account, the Directorate of Public Relations, Ministry of Defence announced:

“India’s defence production soars to an all-time high of ₹1,50,590 Cr in FY 2024-25, marking 18% YoY growth & a 90% jump since 2019-20. Private sector share climbs to 23%. Defence exports hit a record ₹23,622 Cr — powering Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence manufacturing.”

The remarkable growth is attributed to self-reliance initiatives under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat programme, which have expanded domestic manufacturing capabilities, reduced dependence on imports, and boosted defence exports. Public sector entities accounted for 77% of total production, while the private sector’s role climbed to 23%, reflecting increased industry participation.

Defence exports also reached a record ₹23,622 crore, underscoring India’s growing footprint in the global arms market. Officials say these achievements signal a strategic shift toward a robust and independent defence manufacturing ecosystem, even as geopolitical headwinds persist.

The Ministry affirmed that further reforms, investment incentives, and technology partnerships are in the pipeline to sustain the momentum in the coming years.
