The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has assured Nigeria’s traditional rulers that they will be granted a formal and constitutionally recognized role in the country’s governance structure by 2026.
Speaking at a meeting with monarchs in Abuja, Abbas stated that the ongoing constitutional amendment process would include provisions to integrate traditional institutions into governance, particularly at the grassroots level.
“Our traditional leaders are vital to community stability, cultural preservation, and conflict resolution. It is only logical that their influence be formally recognized within the political framework of the nation,” Abbas said.
According to the Speaker, the legislative process is already underway and consultations are being held across the six geopolitical zones to ensure wide consensus. The inclusion of traditional rulers is expected to enhance governance delivery in areas such as rural security, mediation, and local development initiatives.
If successful, this reform would mark a significant shift in Nigeria’s federal structure and could redefine the role of indigenous leadership in national politics.
