Governor Fubara Calls for Peace Amid State of Emergency, Blames Pro-Wike Lawmakers for Political Crisis

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has called on residents to remain calm and law-abiding following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in the state. In a statement released Tuesday night, Fubara reassured citizens of his commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and the continued progress of Rivers State, despite ongoing political tensions.

Fubara: My Administration Has Always Prioritized Stability and Progress

Fubara emphasized that since assuming office, all his actions and decisions have been guided by his constitutional oath of office and a strong sense of duty. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property while ensuring the state’s continuous development.

“Our priorities have always been the protection of lives and property, as well as ensuring the continuous progress of our dear state,” he stated.

He further highlighted his administration’s efforts to uphold constitutional order, despite facing significant political challenges.

Efforts to Implement Peace Agreements Undermined

The governor pointed out that his government had acted in good faith to implement the peace agreements brokered by President Tinubu, including reinstating commissioners who had previously resigned.

“Immediately after Mr. President’s intervention to broker peace, we did not hesitate to implement the agreed terms in good faith,” Fubara said.

He also noted that his administration swiftly complied with the Supreme Court’s judgment to restore normalcy in the state, not for personal gain, but to foster peace, unity, and stability.

Blames Pro-Wike Lawmakers for Frustrating Efforts

However, Fubara expressed frustration over what he described as persistent obstruction by members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly lawmakers aligned with his political rival and predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

“Unfortunately, at every turn, members of the Rivers State House of Assembly frustrated our efforts, thus making genuine peace and progress difficult,” he said.

Despite the political impasse, the governor insisted that governance had not been disrupted.

“Yes, we have political disagreements, but good governance has continued—salaries have been paid, great projects are being executed to move the state forward, and above all, Rivers State is safe, secure, and peaceful under our watch.”

Urges Residents to Stay Peaceful and Uphold Democracy

Fubara urged the people of Rivers State to remain peaceful, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to engaging relevant institutions to protect democracy.

“At this critical time, I urge all Rivers people to remain peaceful and law-abiding. We will engage with all relevant institutions to ensure that our democracy remains strong and that Rivers State continues to thrive,” he assured.

He concluded by encouraging residents to approach the situation with resilience, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process.

“We have always been a resilient people, and we will face this situation with wisdom, patience, and unwavering faith in the democratic process,” Fubara said.

Political Tensions in Rivers State

Governor Fubara’s statement comes amid heightened political tensions in Rivers State, which led to President Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency, suspending Fubara, his deputy, and the entire state assembly for six months. The situation has sparked widespread debate, with opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar condemning the move, while the Rivers State House of Assembly has backed the President’s decision.
