Former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai, came terrifyingly close to tragedy after his convoy was ambushed by Boko Haram fighters in Borno State. It happened along a stretch of road known all too well for danger. And for a man who once led Nigeria’s fight against the insurgency, this was a sobering reminder that the threat is far from over.

Buratai, who served at the helm of the Nigerian Army during some of the fiercest battles with Boko Haram, was traveling to a private event when the convoy was attacked. Eyewitnesses describe a sudden burst of gunfire, followed by explosions. It was a calculated ambush. Well-coordinated. Deadly in its intent.

Security forces responded with discipline and speed. They returned fire and managed to carve out an escape route for the convoy. Miraculously, no casualties have been reported from Buratai’s team. But the fear and shock are real.

This wasn’t just an attack on a former military leader. It was a reminder that no one, no matter how high-ranking or experienced, is immune from the dangers still gripping Nigeria’s northeast. For many, it raises hard questions about security, about progress, and about what it will truly take to end the insurgency for good.
