The Federal Government has announced plans to collaborate with state and local governments, along with other stakeholders, to implement a Proof of Address System aimed at addressing insecurity and enhancing governance across Nigeria.
The initiative, which will be rolled out across all 774 local government areas, seeks to provide every resident with a verifiable and secure address. This system is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening administrative processes in both the public and private sectors.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ sensitisation meeting for the South-West region held at Protea Hotel, Ikeja, on Monday, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, described the initiative as a significant step toward improving security, governance, and service delivery at the grassroots level.
According to Akume, the Proof of Address System will enable better planning, assist law enforcement in tackling crime, and facilitate smoother access to essential services, such as banking and telecommunications.
The initiative has been welcomed by stakeholders who see it as a long-overdue measure to formalize address documentation in Nigeria, ensuring accountability and improving national development strategies. The government has assured citizens that the project will be implemented efficiently, with extensive stakeholder engagement at every level.
