Farm Worker Flees After Fatal Machete Attack on Employer

A farm worker has disappeared after allegedly killing his 60-year-old employer, Mrs. Adelugba, on her farm in the Laoso community of Ondo West Local Government Area. The incident reportedly stemmed from a dispute over stolen kolanuts.

The worker, whose identity remains unknown, was hired by Mrs. Adelugba last week to work on her kolanut farm. After completing his assigned tasks, he allegedly returned to the farm without permission and took some kolanuts.

When confronted about the theft, the worker admitted to taking the produce, according to a source close to the deceased who requested anonymity. The source revealed that the worker had promised to either pay for the stolen kolanuts or have their value deducted from his end-of-year wages—an arrangement Mrs. Adelugba apparently accepted.

“On Saturday, the worker tracked Mrs. Adelugba’s movements to her farm, attacked her with a machete, and killed her,” the source explained. “He then covered her body with leaves and palm fronds before escaping to the village.”

By Sunday, the worker reportedly began confessing to the crime. He eventually led villagers to the location where they recovered Mrs. Adelugba’s remains, which were subsequently transported to the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital morgue in Ondo town.

A police source confirmed that the case has been transferred to the Ondo State Police Command headquarters in Akure for further investigation.

Attempts to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, were unsuccessful, as her phone was switched off at the time of reporting.

The deceased’s family has reportedly been instructed to visit police headquarters in Akure today to obtain the necessary clearance for her burial. According to the source, “If they secure permission early enough, she will be laid to rest today. Otherwise, the burial will be postponed until tomorrow.”
