Dr. Adesida Adewumi, a Consultant Family Physician, has highlighted the health benefits of regular sexual activity for couples, suggesting that those who engage in frequent intimacy tend to live longer and enjoy better overall well-being.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, Adewumi explained that beyond pleasure, sex offers a range of physical and psychological benefits.
Health Benefits of Regular Sex
According to Adewumi, consistent sexual activity can:
- Boost the immune system, making individuals less prone to illnesses.
- Lower blood pressure, reducing the risk of hypertension-related complications.
- Improve sleep quality, helping individuals feel more rested and energized.
- Relieve stress, both mentally and physically.
- Reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, promoting cardiovascular health.
- Alleviate pain and headaches, due to the release of endorphins during intimacy.
- Aid in cancer prevention, particularly lowering the risk of prostate and breast cancer.
“For men, ejaculating at least 21 times a month has been shown to significantly lower the risk of prostate cancer,” Adewumi noted.
Additionally, he highlighted the role of sexual activity in weight management, as it helps burn calories similarly to regular exercise when performed at least three times a week. It can also contribute to lower blood sugar levels, which is beneficial for individuals with diabetes or those at risk.
Mental and Emotional Benefits
Beyond physical health, Adewumi emphasized the positive impact of regular sex on mental well-being. He stated that it:
- Reduces the risk of depression and anxiety, promoting emotional stability.
- Enhances brain function, leading to increased productivity and better cognitive performance.
- Strengthens intimacy and love between partners, fostering stronger relationships.
- Reduces irritability and loneliness, making couples more emotionally connected and satisfied.
He also pointed out that couples who maintain a healthy sexual relationship tend to experience fewer conflicts, improved communication, and greater social and professional confidence.
Sex During Pregnancy
Adewumi addressed the benefits of sex during pregnancy, stating that women who engage in regular intercourse may experience:
- Easier labor and delivery, with fewer complications.
- Quicker post-delivery recovery, due to improved circulation and hormone regulation.
- Reduced menstrual cramps, when sex is practiced a few days before menstruation begins.
Safe and Responsible Sexual Activity
While emphasizing the benefits, Adewumi stressed the importance of practicing safe sex within a committed relationship to minimize the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as HIV, herpes, and hepatitis. He encouraged monogamous relationships as a preventive measure against these diseases.
His insights reinforce the significant role that a healthy sexual relationship plays in overall well-being, highlighting its physical, emotional, and psychological advantages for couples who prioritize intimacy.
