What seemed like a strong move is now officially off. Chelsea have pulled out of talks with AC Milan over French goalkeeper Mike Maignan after refusing to meet the asking price. The deal collapsed with little time left to make something happen before the FIFA Club World Cup.

Sources close to the situation say Milan were hoping to capitalize on Chelsea’s urgency by pushing for a higher fee. But Chelsea didn’t bite. The club reportedly walked away rather than pay what insiders have called a “Club World Cup tax” an inflated price tied to the tournament’s timing and Chelsea’s need to strengthen their squad.

Instead of overpaying, Chelsea are putting their faith in the goalkeepers they already have. The club continues to back Đorđe Petrović and Robert Sánchez, along with young prospects like Lucas Bergström, Jamie Cumming, and rising talent Mike Penders.

This decision signals a few things. First, Chelsea are not willing to be cornered financially just because of a global tournament. And second, they are confident in their current options between the sticks.

Maignan will remain with AC Milan for now. As for Chelsea, all eyes will be on their goalkeepers to deliver in the months ahead.

This is a nice decision, they still have other good goalkeepers like petrovic.
