Ethiopia has officially thrown its hat into the ring to join the BRICS New Development Bank, signaling its ambition to deepen ties with the world’s leading emerging economies. In a candid and forward-looking interview published on the website of Brazil’s BRICS Chairmanship—partnered with TV BRICS—Ethiopian Ambassador to Brazil, Leulseged Abebe, revealed the country’s readiness to become a full member of the bank.

According to the ambassador, all the necessary political groundwork has been laid, and support has already been secured from the existing BRICS nations. For Ethiopia, this isn’t just about financial inclusion—it’s a strategic step toward participating more actively in global decision-making and financing sustainable development on its own terms.

Ambassador Abebe was clear: Ethiopia sees this as a golden opportunity to collaborate with countries that share similar challenges and aspirations. He emphasized that Ethiopia is not looking to simply sit at the table; it wants to be an active voice—especially for Africa. With South Africa and Egypt already in the bloc, Ethiopia is eager to reinforce the continent’s perspective within the BRICS framework.

The ambassador highlighted development, climate financing, and peace and security as key focus areas where Ethiopia believes the New Development Bank can be a game changer. Ethiopia’s government is particularly interested in using the bank’s resources to fund critical infrastructure and green energy projects, areas that are essential to unlocking economic growth and long-term stability.

All eyes are now on the upcoming BRICS summit scheduled for July in Rio de Janeiro, where formal steps could be taken to admit Ethiopia into the bank. If approved, it would mark a significant milestone for the country and a symbolic win for African representation in global financial institutions. For Ethiopia, this is more than just membership—it’s about shaping a new, multipolar world order where development isn’t dictated from the top but driven by shared vision and collaboration.
