Enugu State Launches Enugu Air to Boost Regional Economy and Rival Ibom Air

Enugu State has officially launched Enugu Air, a new state-owned airline set to enhance economic growth, improve connectivity, and create jobs in the Southeast region of Nigeria. The move positions Enugu Air as a competitor to Ibom Air and other domestic carriers, with the potential to increase passenger traffic and revenue for the Nigerian aviation sector.

A New Era for Enugu’s Aviation Industry

Speaking on the development, Hillary Umunna, the Regional Manager of East Airports and Manager of Akanu Ibiam International Airport (AIIA), highlighted the significant benefits Enugu Air will bring to the region. According to him, the airline is expected to drive trade, tourism, and business activities, making Enugu a strategic aviation hub.

“We are committed to ensuring seamless operations for Enugu Air. Its presence at AIIA will enhance regional connectivity and stimulate economic activities, aligning with our vision of making the airport a preferred aviation hub in the Southeast,” Umunna stated.

Meeting International Standards

To facilitate smooth operations, Enugu Air has met key International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, including infrastructure upgrades, enhanced ground handling services, reinforced security measures, and compliance with global safety protocols. The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has also streamlined coordination between stakeholders to ensure efficiency.

Umunna, who was instrumental in launching Cally Air in Cross River State, expressed confidence that Enugu Air’s operations will strengthen the aviation sector while providing better travel options for residents and businesses.

NCAA Licenses Five New Airlines

In a related development, the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has granted Air Operator Certificates (AOC) to five airlines in the past year, authorizing them to commence commercial flights. NCAA Director General Chris Najomo emphasized that all newly approved airlines, including Enugu Air, have met stringent safety and regulatory requirements.

The agency is also ramping up aircraft inspections to ensure operational safety and encourage airlines to expand their fleets, creating employment opportunities for pilots, engineers, flight attendants, and dispatchers.

A Promising Future for Aviation in Nigeria

With Enugu Air’s entry into the market, the competition among domestic airlines is set to increase, potentially leading to better services and improved air travel experiences for Nigerians. As the state government pushes for greater economic integration through aviation, the airline is expected to play a key role in boosting regional and national growth.
