Nigeria is at a breaking point, this is the message Nasir El-Rufai is trying to hammer home. In one of his most candid political statements yet, the former governor of Kaduna State didn’t mince words about the direction Nigeria is heading. To him, it’s no longer about party loyalty or ethnic affiliations it’s about survival.
“This country is facing an existential crisis,” El-Rufai said, adding, “We may not have a country for you to contest for president, if we continue the way we’re going, or if things get worse.” It’s a bold, alarming statement but one that many Nigerians, frustrated by years of economic hardship, insecurity, and government inertia, might find relatable.
El-Rufai’s remarks come at a time when confidence in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the party he helped build, is wavering. He pointedly declared that what the country needs now is a candidate who can do two things: offer real, workable solutions to Nigeria’s deep-rooted problems and ignite enough hope to inspire voter turnout strong enough to defeat the APC.
“I do not care where the person comes from,” he said. “What matters is the capacity to fix this country.” Coming from a prominent Northern politician, this is no small statement. It’s a rejection of identity politics and a call for a shift in how Nigerians think about leadership.
Whether you agree with him or not, El-Rufai’s warning is loud and clear,Nigeria is running out of time.
