Driver Charged in Death of Bumpa Co-Founder Now Awaiting Trial

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the arraignment of Biola Adams-Odutayo in connection with the fatal accident that claimed the life of Adetunji Opayele, co-founder of Nigerian tech startup Bumpa.

Opayele, known to friends and colleagues as Teejay, lost his life on March 4 when his power bike was involved in a collision with a vehicle on Ozumba Mbadiwe road in Victoria Island, Lagos. The 32-year-old software engineer’s death sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s tech community.

Following public outcry and a widely-circulated petition on Change.org, the police provided an update on the case. According to Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos police spokesperson, Adams-Odutayo – a healthcare professional employed at an insurance brokering firm – was formally charged on March 12 at Court 1, Tinubu.

“We can confirm that following a thorough investigation, Abiola Odutayo was arraigned for driving on a public highway in a reckless and careless manner without due care and attention to other road users and causing the death of Tunji Opayele,” Hundeyin stated in a post on X.

The petition that gained significant traction online contained allegations that Adams-Odutayo had refused to assist Opayele after the crash, reportedly expressing concerns about blood staining her vehicle. These claims intensified calls for justice across social media platforms.

The court has granted bail to Adams-Odutayo, with the next hearing scheduled for April 16, 2025. “The Lagos State Police Command remains committed to transparency, fairness, and justice,” Hundeyin added in his statement.

The case continues to draw attention as the tech community mourns the loss of a promising entrepreneur whose company, Bumpa, had been making significant strides in Nigeria’s growing technology sector.
