The Federal Government has officially declared Thursday, June 12, a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day.
The announcement, made by the Ministry of Interior on behalf of the Federal Government, reaffirms June 12 as the day set aside to honor Nigeria’s democratic journey and the sacrifices made in securing and sustaining civilian rule.
June 12 holds particular significance in Nigeria’s political history. It commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely considered the freest and fairest in the country’s history, won by the late Chief MKO Abiola. The Buhari administration in 2018 formally recognized June 12 as Democracy Day, replacing May 29.
Citizens across the country are expected to observe the day with reflections, public events, and discussions on Nigeria’s progress and persistent democratic challenges.
